Can My Tax Refund Change My Life?

It’s tax refund season! Most of us typically anticipate the refund and it’s already spent before the check has even cleared. I can remember a time when I would be extremely excited about receiving a “difference check” or “refund check” after my student grants and loans paid off my tuition and fees. When I think back on what I spent (wasted) the money on I just cringe!

In our society we often have the propensity to indulge (I am so guilty!) instead of investing large sums of money into an assets that will appreciate in value over time. We typically cave into that never ending inner desire to have or do that which is outside our day to day means. Hind sight is 20/20 and now that I am older and wiser, I would have done it all differently. If I could write a letter to my 19 year old self, it would go something like this:

“Dear Val,

Focus on what is important. I know you love fashion, eating out, having a good time with your friends, and all things fabulous, but that is not what is important right now. You don’t have to have a new outfit for each event, and you don’t have to make it to every event! Get your education. Build meaningful relationships. Chase after your dreams whole heartily. Join organizations, make straight A’s. People will come and go, fashion trends will come and go, but the opportunity to be young and free will never come again. Maximize this season of your life. Make wise decisions. Save and invest your money, and in due time, you can find pleasure in everything else.”

I know that I have found myself in a few situations where I have sat back and thought, “What on earth did I do with all of that money?!” If you could write a letter to your younger self what would you say? If you could go back to that moment when you received your large sum of money, what would you tell yourself to do? Would you continue to spend on things that prove to be liabilities? Or would you invest in assets that build equity and wealth? What will you think of your financial decisions three, five, ten years from now?
